“The New Zealand Cellar is a very welcome arrival to the UK wine scene, doubling the number of online retailers dedicated to New Zealand wines. The New Zealand Cellar website was launched earlier this year and has an impressive line up of around 160 wines from 60 producers – impressive in calibre as much as in number, as you will see from my tasting notes below, taken at the launch. The website is attractive (New Zealand is so photogenic), well-designed, easy to use and has good information on the producers – story rather than technical detail – and the regions. There’s not much detail about individual wines other than a tasting note. Founder Melanie Brown has excellent credentials: a Kiwi who arrived in London ten years ago and who played ‘a fundamental role in developing The Providores and Tapa Room [Marylebone High Street, London W1] wine list to offer the largest selection of premium New Zealand wines in Europe’. She remains the buyer for The Providores, which gives her an unrivalled opportunity to see which wines excel at the table and complement head chef Peter Gordon’s eclectic and wine-aware menu.

I am truly thrilled that Melanie has decided to create The New Zealand Cellar, which enables wine lovers to buy some of the fabulous NZ wines that she has been instrumental in sourcing for us at The Providores restaurant. Many of these are unavailable at retail from anywhere else. I will be shopping here myself as Melanie has a keen eye (and palate) and I know she’ll be looking hard at what New Zealand is currently producing.
